Choosing Your Career

Career Adviser Assembling The Word Career With Six Wooden Cubes

Choosing your career is a very intricate process, one that requires a great deal of planning. People who spend some time evaluating their strengths and weaknesses, their likes and dislikes and what exactly they want out of their lives usually hit the nail on the head and spend a lifetime loving what they are at. Those who don’t get into the wrong profession initially and have to make course correction midway, thereby losing out on lucrative pay packets and seniority.

The whole process can be loosely structured into three broad areas –

  • Knowing your strengths and weaknesses – Your personality, education and training will make you better suited for some jobs or business. For example, if you have majored in software development, you can either set up your own business or go for a job. It depends on your inclination, financial stability or amounts you can invest in.
  • Knowing your options – Do some research on the jobs that interest you and match it with your knowledge on the subject. This need not be linked to your qualifications or experience. A person whose family is in the cleaning business for instance will know the ins and outs of it as well as have a host of references to start with. The scale initially rests on the investment levels. The start can be a one man show from a garage as a base just to keep the equipment or a franchise of a reputed cleaning company.
  • Ask for advice even if you don’t always take it – Consider some trades that might appeal to you and ask for advice on how to get started. Base your considerations on your areas of interest. If you feel that with an electrical diploma or degree under your belt you want to en-cash on your training, ask electricians in Melbourne about the intricacies of the trade and more importantly its pitfalls. There is nothing better than guidance from those who are well versed in the same profession with hands-on training.

Choose your career after carefully weighing the pros and cons and you cannot possibly go wrong.
